VINCENNES, Ind. - Illuminated by candlelight and filled with hope, Vincennes University students and the VU Community united to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Together, they carried forward his vision of justice - one step at a time.

They paid tribute to the civil rights leader's legacy during a meaningful candlelight event by participating in VU's second annual MLK Memorial Walk at the Student Recreation Center on Thursday, Jan. 23. They passionately live his vision, uniting their dreams to create a brighter future for everyone by walking together in solidarity, writing down their personal dreams, and posting them inside the center. Iconic images of King and pictures of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom adorned the walls for all to see.

The words of VU Dean of Global Diversity Heidi Tasa and VU student and Legacy Club: Black Student Union President Ada Hedrick '26 further enlivened the walk. Honoring the history and significance of our nation's fight for freedom, the VU Pep Band performed a heartfelt rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Tasa said, "The Vincennes University MLK Memorial Walk honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the 250,000 individuals who participated in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on Aug. 28, 1963. This historic event is remembered for Dr. King's powerful "I Have a Dream" speech. The VU MLK Memorial Walk serves as a reminder that every step we take in life can contribute to building bridges of change."

Hedrick implored audience members to keep the dream alive in the 21st Century and beyond.

Hedrick said, "We want everyone to come away with a stronger sense of unity and empowerment. We hope to spark friendly discussions, encourage reflections on Dr. King's legacy, and inspire a commitment to creating a more inclusive community together."

The event concluded with a shared sense of purpose, as participants were reminded that living Dr. King's dream requires action, unity, and a commitment to justice. By walking together, sharing their dreams, and reflecting on his enduring legacy, the Vincennes University Community demonstrated that his vision for equality and inclusion lives on - not just in words but in the steps we take together to build a brighter future for all.
